Frequently Asked Questions

Please search through our frequently asked questions to help assist with any problems you may be having.

I'm ready to upload my website. What do I do now?

By using FTP (file transfer protocol) software you can upload and download your web page files from your computer to the server. There are many FTP software programs available as trial or free versions such as CuteFTP and WS_FTP.

You will need the following information to upload through an FTP program:

  • Site Name: whatever your website is called
  • Address: this is your domain name without the www or ftp, eg: yourdomain.com.au
  • Port: 21
  • Username: this is in the email you received when your hosting account was created
  • Password: this is in the email you received when your hosting account was created
  • Local Path: the folder on your computer that contains your website

* NOTE: You may not need all this information and individual FTP programs may label this differently.

When I type my domain into the browser a temporary page is displayed instead of my website. What should I do?

Make sure your website is uploaded to the httpdocs directory
Make sure your home page (the website entrance page) is called index.htm or index.html or index.php

You will notice that there is already a file named index.html in the httpdocs directory. This is the default page placed automatically into the httpdocs directory when your account was created. Simply overwrite this with your index file.

I registered my domain name somewhere else. Will Webcessity still host it?

Yes. When ordering your hosting package, enter your domain name and select Transfer Hosting. Your domain will need to be delegated (or transferred) to the Webcessity servers. We can do this for you FREE of charge or we will provide you with the neccesary details for you to complete the delegation yourself.

Is it possible to change my domain name after I have registered it?

No. Once a domain name is registered it is unable to be changed.

What is Web Hosting?

Web Hosting is the space available on a computer (known as a 'server') which is permantly connected to the Internet. This server hosts your domain name, website and email addresses. It is similar to renting office space except online.

When a visitor types your website address into their browser, it requests information from the server which then 'serves' or sends back the information to be displayed by the browser.

I have an update I need doing.. Who do I contact?

I've just received an email confirming my new email address. What do I do now?

To set up your new email account to be able to receive emails through your Microsoft Outlook program, follow the following steps:

  • Open Outlook Express
  • From the menu options click 'Tools', then 'Accounts'
  • Select the 'Mail' tab
  • On the right hand side click 'Add' then 'Mail'
  • Type your name or Company name in the 'Display name' box. Click 'Next'.
  • Type your email address in the 'E-mail address' box (eg. sales@yourdomain.com.au) Click 'Next'.
  • 'My incoming mail server is a pop3 server' should be left as is
  • In the 'Incoming mail server:' box type your domain name in this format - mail.yourdomain.com.au
  • In the 'Outgoing mail server:' box type in your ISP's outgoing mail server (check your ISP email account properties for this)
  • In the 'Account name' box type the mailname that you created above (eg. 'sales')
  • In the 'Password' box type the password that you created for the mailname above. Click 'Next'.

What is a POP3 Mailbox?

A POP3 Mailbox is an email address through which you can send and receive email. All our hosting packages allow you to setup POP3 Mailboxes using your hosted domain, for example, info@yourdomain.com.au.

You can create and manage your own mailboxes through your Hosting Control Panel and then use an email program such as Outlook Express to send and receive email (as per directions above).

Do you offer Web Based Email?

Yes. We offer web based email called WebMail that is available with every hosting package. It is similar to Hotmail, where you can access your POP3 Mailbox from any web browser by entering your Mailbox username and password. WebMail is great for anyone who is often away from their main computer.

I received this email message: Quota exceeding warning. What does this mean?

Depending on which hosting package you are using, all mailboxes have a set quota, for eg: 2MB. If you haven't downloaded your email for a while or someone has sent you a large file, your mailbox may be full and have reached the quota.

You simply need to download your email or connect to your mailbox using WebMail (http://webmail.yourname.com.au/) and clear some space in your mailbox.

If your mailbox has exceeded the quota, any messages delivered to that mailbox will then be bounced until you have cleared some space.

I can't send or receive emails at all. What's happening?

This can be caused by a number of things, the main one is trying to access your mailbox with the wrong username and/or password.

Your username (or Account Name) is the name before the @ in your email address.
eg. for info@yourdomain.com.au the username is info.

The password in what you specified for the mailbox in your Hosting Control Panel.

If that doesn't work, try changing the mailname password in Hosting Control Panel, then update the new password for your mailbox in your email program.

If all else fails, simply remove and then recreate the mailname in your Hosting Control Panel.
