A - Z Of Internet Terms

A - Z of Internet Terms

The internet is a multi-faeceted and amazing invention, but often quite confusing. This is our A to Z list of all things internet that we will be adding to each quarter.

A is for @

The @ symbol stands for "at".

So, simply put, when you're emailing someone you're sending it to the recipient [at] a certain address. Think of it this way so as not to get confused between an email address and a web address.

As email communication is getting more and more common every day, it's becoming more and more essential to have an email address that is easy to understand, and even easier to remember. As with phone numbers, email addresses aren't something that you should be updating every few months, so be wary of using internet service provider emails (such as bigpond or optus), as you lose the email if you decide to get your internet through a different provider!

Don't forget - if you have your own domain name, you are able to get email addresses associated with it. Is it time for you to upgrade you email account?

B is for byte

We've all heard of bytes - whether it's a kilobyte (KB), megabyte (MB) or gigabyte (GB). They dictate your email inbox size, your internet browsing capabilities and even your computer hard drive size.

The similarity between all these forums - information. A byte is a unit of digital information, made up of bits.

The size of the information can be determined with the following simple rules:

Decimal
Value SI
1000 k kilo
1000² M mega
1000³ G giga

It usually pays to find out your byte limits for your various online activities. Not only can it keep you aware of your limits, but it can also prevent some unneeded headaches. For example, most internet service providers have a limit on the size of an email you can send through them. Finding out what this limit is can prevent your data being lost into the internet abyss.

If you are having troubles such as emails being too large, why not try sites such as MediaFire or YouSendIt.

C is for Copy

Content. Arguably the most important part of your website - but also th easiest to change.

Whilst working in web design, we have found content to be the most common reason for a hold up in the design, implementation and updating of websites. We would like to go through a few simple steps that could help you in this process.

Remember, what you see today isn't necessarily what you get tomorrow. The internet is an ever-changing medium, which allows much more flexibility than things such as print and tv have ever had. What you write now is not set in stone - don't be scared of it! If prices change or you find a spelling mistake within the text - never fear, it can be changed quickly and easily.

If it seems all too daunting, there are people out there that can help. Webcessity is able to offer you content writing services, but there are professional copy writers for the web available for hire from all around the world as well. As the web is different from print and tv, the way we take it in is also different. If you want your website to have the best impact - talk to an expert.
